2nd Year – Is University Overrated?

Hello Everyone,

I was having a discussion with my little sister and her friends about college and university, and the question they asked me was “Is University Overrated?”.

I was not able to give them a straightforward answer because I agree and disagree that university is overrated.
Reason being is because in some cases you will need to go to university in order to know certain areas of the industry that you are interested in i.e. If you want to be a lawyer there are certain things you will need to know that University may teach you. It may not be university you go to, but doing a certain course in order to know the ins and out of law.

Whereas degrees such as business management, I do not think you have to go to university to study. You could either start working straight away as an apprentice and work your way up within this industry. The advantage of doing this is that you are doing practical work which shows employers you know what you are doing and you are capable of doing the work, whereas if you do not have experience, how are they 100% sure that you can do what you need to do?

Therefore I think it is overrated in some cases because some students who go to university do not necessarily work within the field they have studied within. (This is based on research I have done, “However, there are a number of subjects where over 30% of graduates are in non-graduate jobs after six months”. Stated by The Complete University Guide. http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/)

This is not a right or wrong answer, this is my personal belief, this is based on people I know who went to university and those who didn’t go university.

We need to remember that university does not guarantee us a job or success, it just enhances our knowledge and helps us gain connections, but it is all within your hands what you do in the future.

Please feel free to comment and state your beliefs!
Take care everyone!

    Have fun* (see previous post).
Not everyone will be successful and not everyone will get a job. It depends on the individual. In the good old days (before the 21st century) going to university meant getting a good job. University was for the middle class and the weathly. Now access has been granted to those with lower economic status in order to close or lessen the gap between the ‘rich’ and ‘poor’. This now means that more and more people are getting degrees making it difficult for employers to choose the right candidate. In addition, employers now look for people with experience which is not so good for graduates because they usually spend 3 years ‘concentrating’ getting their degrees which meant that there is no time for a job, volunteering or work experience. Now as undergraduates you have to study and get some sort of work experience, unfortunately this may prove to be difficult and concentrate on both. With God anything is possible. Good luck to your sister and her friends. Tell them not to forget to enjoy life. Xxx
